So we've made something ugly and we hate it.
And that's GREAT.
If we're making mistakes, it means we're making.
Most people don't get that far. Be proud of yourself, moon baby.
Art witchery and grimoire keeping thrive on experimentation.
And sometimes... experiments don't turn out the way we hoped.
Now what?
We have options:
A) Tear that shit out. It's your book, witch!
B) Allow it to endure as a testament to your growth.
C) Push it to the next level with a bold revision.
Play transforms Everything.
Let's explore ways to transform those underwhelming entries into your new favorite pages.
If It Feels Boring:
Stencil over a portion of the composition
Splatter paint and trace around it
Flip the page upside down and write on it
Add an eye
Experiment with cropping the page
Burn a hole in it
Bring in black and white stripes
Stipple lots of little dots to add movement
Add a speech bubble
Paste in an element upside-down
Add diagonal lines to activate a static composition
Draw with white chalk, marker or paint
If It Feels Muddy:
Introduce a bold contrasting color
Add breathing room with white space
Collage in an “active” word to add energy
Paint part of the page black
Outline one element
If It Feels Unfinished:
Create a frame
Draw a pattern over a portion of the page
Add a boarder
Introduce a tiny detail
Paste an element in the foreground
Transfer a xerox image on top
If It Feels Wrong & It's Time to Start Over:
Leave it be. You might just need a break!
Cut the page in half lengthwise
Spill water, coffee or tea on the page
Paste in a photograph
Cut windows to reveal the page behind it
Trace your hand and fill in with a pattern
Mask with tape, paint over and remove tape
Sew with a needle and thread over a portion of the image
Relax your vision and see if an image presents itself
Mod podge tissue paper all over the page
Cover it with stickers
Use a brayer to roll paint over the page
Apply a heavy drippy layer of spray paint
Squish paint with a pallet knife or old credit card
Experimentation and revision infuse our work with vital magick. Have the confidence to re-vision your work, Moon Baby, and you'll push your grimoire, and your art magick practice, to the Next Level.
